The Problem Of Song Lyrics In Ads

Don't Get No Better Than This

I'm at home, here on Day Two of Round One of the Men's NCAA Basketball Championship -- when March Madness has so many simultaneous games, they barely know how to contain it. As I write this, Winthrop is thropping (grin) Notre Dame, and Texas A&M Corpus Christi is beating up on Wisconsin. The latter is a 15 seed against an number 2! I love this, even if it involves rooting against a Big Ten team at the moment.

Which Brings Us To The Following TV Ad

For Chevy, touting that they have a lot of 30 mpg or better vehicles. In the background, a fast, happy version of Don Maclean's "American Pie", presumably just to get to the lyric: "Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry." While that's fine, um, don't we quickly get to the line, "This'll be the day that I die..."

Not sure that's the very best line to put into a car commercial, eh? (GRIN)

Oh Well

It doesn't matter. Long ago we gave up listening to the lyrics and just listened to the song. Actually, listening to the quality broadcasts of WLAV-FM the last couple of years, I've been able to figure what the words were to all sorts of 70s and 80s rock anthems. Things which never quite were intelligible over dorm stereos.

Oh, and WLAV is doing their own sort of March Madness brackets, pitting rock band against rock band. Pretty amusing. Computers and webpages mean you do bracketology on ANYTHING. (grin)
