Autumn Falls

October is one-third done. By the calendar it is officially Fall. And it's the Fall Semester. But of course it's more complicated than that.

-- Most of the trees in West Michigan haven't changed yet.

-- Three weeks ago we were up north in the U.P. Had some leaves. Had some color. Had some 39°F mornings. Had some 82°F (!) heat.

-- But there are young trees all blazing gold or red. And there are patches of leaves amoldering on the ground. That smells right. First hint was ten days ago at the foot surgeon's office -- you wouldn't expect much in a parking lot. But on the little island next to the handicapped parking spots, these little trees had dumped enough big leaves and there'd been enough rain...

-- Autumn rains, frost and freezing warnings. With the low temp down in the 30s, I switched from heat pump to real heat. Now we don't get the compressor grinding -- our furnace is so quiet it's hard to know it's on.

-- But also blue skies. Need to take the F3, with the big 72mm Polar filter on the 28-200mm f3.5-5.6D all-in-one lens and get some shots in the late afternoon. That roll of film has the U.P. pictures on it, too.

-- The solstice meant direct sun driving east in the morning and west in the evening. It's getting better, but will rear its ugly head when DST ends in a few weeks.

-- Starting to wear the car sweater in the morning. Close to needing a jacket in the walk to the office.

-- Picking up recipes that can be done in the oven. Mmm.

-- And we are finishing up the late summer tomatoes. The nectarines were uncharacteristically spectacular. The apples are coming in sweet and juicy. 2014 may have started with a harsh winter, but the West Michigan produce has been some of the best ever. Sigh.

-- Oh. And with the election nearing, gas today was down to $2.92.9/gallon in town. And still falling in freefall. (nudge) Get it? Huh? Fall...? Uh, never mind.

Yeah. I love Fall. And I love the word Autumn more. (grin)
