Mail Early For Those St. Patrick's Day Presents

With St. Patrick's Day on Tuesday, we decided to have our traditional corned beef and cabbage dinner on Sunday, a good day for letting the corned beef and cabbage cook all afternoon -- we could scarcely stand it, it smelled so good. Don't worry, we'll have corned beef and cabbage ON St. Patrick's Day. And for Pi Day, we had decided on a Key lime pie, so that was made on Saturday.

A lovely boiled dinner of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes plus a nice side of soda bread, made with half rye flour. Oh, yum. Not pictured, the Key lime pie. (Click on photo for larger.)

That crack in the title about "mailing early" doesn't mean the meal was "mailed in". Rather it was a bit of humor to use as an excuse to show off Mrs. Dr. Phil's engineering handiwork. About the last snow we got, after a whole winter of snow and ice, our mailbox got blitzed by an Ottawa County snow plow. It's one of those plastic Rubbermaid style mailboxes, with the plastic pillar attached to a 4x4 sunk into the ground. The first regular mailboxes we had, used the 4x4 posts all the way up. But these plastic ones use a shorter 4x4 stub. Less 4x4 to crack when whacked by a plow, but it can do a number on the plastic. This time the plastic pillar split open and the mail box leaned over.

Version 1.0 of the repair was just to stand it up straighter by propping it up with a 2x4. That worked until the snow bank melted. (grin) So Version 2.0 uses 2x4s strapped tight using stretchy rubber tie-downs from Tru-Value.

Mrs. Dr. Phil and Mrs. Dr. Phil's engineering handiwork on Friday the 13th Eve and Pi Day Eve Eve. I was just going to take the picture of the mailbox when I came back from some errands, but Mrs. Dr. Phil arrived home at the same time. So we'll let the artist take her bow.
